Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, the demand for therapy skyrocketed. Due to the rampant increase of anxiety and depression due to the uncertainty of the time, many people have looked to counselors or therapists to talk through their feelings. As the demand for therapists skyrocketed, so did the number of clients that they were taking on. Central Texas is no exception, and Louis Laves-Webb had a few words to say about the impact of the pandemic on mental health.

Louis Laves-Webb has been a therapist for 20 years. He says that 2020 was the most difficult year of his career. An increased workload, and the emotional nature of working in therapy, has led to burnout for Louis and countless other therapists across the country. While therapists are taught to separate themselves, and not get emotionally invested in their client’s issues, it’s always a struggle. He said it was hard to stay neutral while clients were sharing their anxieties about the virus. This feeling of empathy regarding anxieties of the virus was particularly strong after Laves-Webb’s son contracted the virus.
